يک عضو ماهيچه اي به شکل گلابي مي باشد که درون لگن در بالاي مثانه و جلوي راست روده ( رکتوم) واقع شده است.اندازه طبيعي آن حدود 8در5 سانتيمتر است. ارتفاع ان شش تا هشت سانتيمتر و پهناي ان سه تا چهار سانتيمتر است اما در طي حاملگي رحم تغييرات زيادي را متحمل ميشود مثلا در نه ماهگي ارتفاع ان به سي سانتيمتر ميرسد. رحم در اين وضع در انتهاي مهبل قرار گرفته و تقريبا به سمت مثانه متمايل و بدان متكي ميشود. در طول عادت-ماهيانه نيز رحم محل خود را به راحتي تغيير ميدهد. ”رباطهاي نرم“ تا حدي به رحم انعطاف پذيري ميدهند و در همان حال ان را معلق نگه ميدارند. در هر طرف انتهايي رحم ”لوله هاي فالوپ“ وجود دارند. عضله رحمي با مخاطي به نام ”اندومتريم“ پوشيده شده است. اين مخاطها كه حاوي رگهاي خوني و غدد مترشحه ميباشند همچنين دريافت كننده ”تخم“ نيز هستند و البته با توجه به سن و دوره-ماهيانه هر شخص تغييرات مهمي در بافت آنها رخ ميدهد. وقتي تخمك بارور نشود اين مخاط بعلاوه تخمك از رحم خارج ميشوند. رحم با گردنه ان كه قسمتي سفت و محكم (حدودا سه سانت) ميباشد بسته ميشود. شما ميتوانيد اين قسمت را با انگشت خود در انتهاي مهبل حس كنيد. مجرايي ظريف از بين قيف-رحم ميگذرد و بدين ترتيب رحم به مهبل مرتبط ميشود. از طريق همين مجراست كه خون-قاعدگي بيرون مي آيد يا اسپرمها نير وارد رحم شده و به سمت لوله هاي فالوپ به قصد باروري تخمك ميروند. گردنه-رحم در وسط خود مجراي كوچكي دارد اين مجرا در زناني كه هنوز بچه دار نشده اند كوچكتر از كساني است كه زايمان داشته اند.
